Halloween is next week – are you planning anything spooky?! I always love to get in the spirit by making a special treat or two… but ya know, nothing too complicated because who has time for that?! These little mummy dogs may not be aaalllll that spooky but they are certainly kooky, adorable, and well, DELICIOUS! They only take a few minutes to assemble and they’re perfect for kids to make! I served mine up on a “web” of fiery kraut but feel free to skip that part for picky kiddos who’d be more excited about a cauldron of blood (aka ketchup)!
For my mummy dogs I used Gilbert’s Craft Sausages and Pillsbury crescent roll sheets. I went for the Cheddar Chicken Sausage because cheese, obviously, but they have lots of flavor varieties to choose from. The cheddar sausages are 3 WW smart points each and are literally bursting with cheese! You can check the store locator to see if you can find them near you but if not, no worries, simply use whatever kind of sausage you’d like.
These little guys couldn’t be easier to make – you simply wrap a sausage in crescent dough and bake them off in the oven. To start, you just need 1/3 of a tube of crescent roll dough. Before you unroll the dough slice your section into four even pieces. When you unroll each piece you’ll be left with one long section of dough.
Cut each section in half and now channel your inner elementary school kid and roll them out like play-doh! Ya know, like play-doh snakes?! Gently roll each half into a long skinny “snake” – you should have 8 pieces when you’re finished! Now the fun part – wrap up your mummies using the dough bandages, using two bandages per sausage.
Transfer your mummy dogs to a cookie sheet and let them bake until golden brown. Once they’re done you can bring them to life by adding eyes made of a little dot of ketchup, mustard, or an olive! Are these cute or what?!
Serve them up with a fun sauce for dunking and pop in a scary movie for a perfect Halloween themed night! Each mummy dog comes to 5 Blue WW SmartPoints or 6 Green WW SmartPoints and 186 calories each – enjoy! I served mine on a “web” of Cleveland Kraut Gnar Gnar which is 0 smart points.
- 4 Gilbert's Craft Sausages Chicken & Cheddar Sausages (or sub your favorite Gilbert's flavor or any other variety of sausages).
- ⅓ roll of Pillsbury Seamless Crescent Sheets (1/3 of the roll = 2 serving of the dough)
- Kraut for serving, optional
- Sauce of choice, optional
- Preheat oven to 375F.
- Carefully remove the dough from the container and while it is still rolled up cut a section to use that is ⅓ of the dough. Set the remaining dough aside - it can be used for another recipe.
- While your ⅓ piece is still rolled up cut the section into four even slices.
- Unroll each of the four sections so that you have four long sections. Cut each of the four pieces in half so that you now have eight pieces.
- Gently roll each piece into a long skinny rope (like you're rolling a play-doh snake!)
- Time to wrap your mummies! Wrap two of the long skinny ropes around each sausage, leaving a small section of the sausage exposed at the top for the mummy's face. Make sure to crisscross your dough to achieve a bandage-like texture. While you are wrapping the sausages you can gently pull the dough to extend it even further.
- Transfer your mummies to an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 13-16 minutes until the dough is golden brown.
*If using a different sausage be sure to recalculate points, as they may change.
