It doesn’t matter if you’re 5 or 50, you are going to love these mini pretzel dogs! These pretzels wrapped sausages are golden brown and tender on the outside and juicy on the inside. They’re perfect for parties, potlucks, tail gates, or any ol’ weekday night when you want something fun for dinner! On top of that they are super versatile – use your favorite sausage or hot dog and then pick out a variety of dipping sauces! Each of my Mini Pretzel Dogs is just 2 Blue WW SmartPoints/3 Green WW SmartPoints or 86 calories.
To make these I went with the old trusty two ingredient dough – equal parts plain Greek yogurt and self-rising flour. The dough is so easy to work with and I always have ingredients on hand to make it. It works great for this recipe and puffs up nicely to make each pretzel dog a decent-sized portion. We just need to brush the top with an egg wash and add a sprinkle of course salt to get the yummy pretzel-like quality.
For the sausage I used one of my favorites – Gilbert’s Craft Sausages Aloha Chicken Sausage. It’s slightly sweet and perfect with the salty pretzel. You can use a variety or sausages to make these though – whatever sounds good! Gilbert’s has several different options that would make delicious pretzel dogs and you can check their store locator to see if you can find them in your area. If you aren’t able to get your hands on these just use whatever brand you have available. You can use a turkey and cheddar dog, a bratwurst, smoked sausage, or a classic hot dog – any of these would be delicious!
These pretzels dogs are quick to make and only take about 15 minutes to bake in the oven. If you want to make them for a party you can wrap the dogs in advance and keep them in the fridge until it’s time to bake. Just brush on the egg wash and sprinkle with salt right before popping them in the oven and then you’ll have hot and fresh appetizers for your guests!
My Mini Pretzel Dogs recipe makes 12 servings at 2 Blue WW SmartPoints/3 Green WW Smart Points each or 86 calories (see notes for points info). I served mine with a variety of dipping sauces – brown mustard, ketchup, and honey mustard. With all the different sausage and sauce combos the flavor possibilities are endless and sure to be a crowd pleaser- enjoy!
- 4 Aloha Gilbert's Craft Chicken Sausages (or sub favorite sausage, hot dog, etc*)
- 1 scant cup plain fat free Greek yogurt
- 1 cup self rising flour, 2 tbsp reserved for dusting
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- coarse salt or pretzel salt
- Dipping sauces such as mustards and ketchup for serving**
- Preheat oven to 375F.
- Cut each sausage into 3 equal pieces so that you have 12 pieces total.
- In a large bowl mix together the greek yogurt and flour. Stir until the dough is well combined and formed into a ball.
- Using the reserved flour, lightly flour a work surface and turn the dough out onto it. Knead until the dough is a nice, smooth ball. Add a little additional flour if dough is too sticky.
- Divide dough ball into 4 equal pieces. Now divide each of those pieces into 3 equal pieces. You should have 12 small pieces of dough.
- Dusting with a little flour as needed, roll one piece of dough between your hands until it is a smooth ball. Roll back and forth to turn the ball into an elongated piece that is about 3-4 inches long, enough to wrap around the sausage. Lay the piece down and gently flatten it until it resembles a flat oval.
- Wrap the piece of dough around one of the sausage pieces, pinching at the seem.
- Place the wrapped sausage seam-side down onto a sprayed baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough and sausage until you have 12 pieces.
- Brush the top of each piece with the egg, making sure to coat all of the dough. Generously sprinkle the top with salt.
- Bake for 15-17 minutes, checking the bottoms to make sure they aren't getting too brown, until the dough is fully cooked and golden brown. (Note: you can broil the tops for the last 1-2 minutes to help them brown if needed). Enjoy!
**dipping sauces might add additional points depending on what you to use**
Points Info: The sausages I use are 3 SmartPoint per link. If you substitute a different variety please double check points as the value might change.
If you need more than 12 pretzel dogs for a party simply multiple the recipe by the desired number of servings.
If you want to make these in advance for a party I would wrap the sausage with the dough and keep in the refrigerator until ready to bake. Place on a sprayed baking sheet and add the egg wash and salt just before baking.
